Rosa Bonheur,
a famous animal painter, also distinguished herself through her sculptures, which she produced
until the 1850s. Trained by her father and Léon Cogniet, she was particularly drawn to domestic animals observed at fairs. The vast majority of her sculptures were cast in bronze by the foundryman Hippolyte Peyrol (1856–1929), the husband of Juliette Bonheur, the artist’s younger sister.
J. d’Estray, a foundryman, took over the H. Peyrol workshop.
