Large Antique Earthenware Dish In Need Of Restoration.
Large earthenware serving dish.
Central design: a theatrical-style frame, columns, and a large curtain draped on the right in shades of blue.
A couple is depicted; the man is holding a musical instrument, and the woman is making a small, costumed monkey dance.
Scalloped shape with flat, openwork handles.
Dynamic outline in the Rocaille style, adorned with broad blue volutes imitating a seashell, complemented by a frieze of floral scrolls and birds painted in polychrome (yellow, green, ochre).
Cursive inscription on the back, painted with a brush: “40” surmounted by an “X”—a workshop or painter’s mark.
The clay reveals an ochre/reddish terracotta base. White tin-glaze. Grand feu technique.
