Glazed Terracotta Lion Piggy Bank - 19th-century Folk Art
A glazed earthenware piggy bank depicting a lion lying on a terrace, with a luminous yellow-ochre glaze accented with orange-brown oxide strokes to highlight the mane, eyes, and claws.
This is a sacrificial piggy bank, as the object had to be broken to retrieve its contents. The slot on the back was cut by hand into the fresh clay before firing.
Probably from eastern or northern France, though a British origin cannot be ruled out; circa the mid-19th century.
Dimensions: length 16.5 cm – height 11.5 cm – width 8.5 cm.
In perfect condition, no cracks, no restoration. The glaze has a beautiful luster.
