Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein (1899–1990)
Born in Cologne in 1899, Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein was a leading German ceramicist of the interwar modernist period. Trained in the applied arts, she studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920 to 1921, where she became familiar with the artistic and formal explorations of the avant-garde.
In 1923, she founded the Haël-Werkstätten für künstlerische Keramik in Marwitz, near Berlin, with her husband Gustav Loebenstein and his brother Daniel. Under her artistic direction, the workshop developed an innovative line of utilitarian and decorative ceramics, characterized by geometric shapes, rhythmic lines, and glazes in bold colors. Her creations, distributed in Germany and abroad, are among the most notable expressions of German design in the 1920s.
After the deaths of her husband and brother-in-law in 1928, she continued to run the company. Due to anti-Semitic persecution by the Nazi regime, she was forced to sell the workshops in 1934 and emigrated to England in 1936, where she continued her artistic work under the name Grete Marks. She died in London in 1990.
The set shown here, consisting of a teapot, a lidded sugar bowl, eight cups, and their eight saucers, is made of white glazed earthenware decorated with polychrome turquoise, yellow, black, brown, and blue, evokes the modernist aesthetic developed by Margarete Heymann-Loebenstein and the Haël workshops.
