"naïade," A Sculpture And Nightlight, Art Deco Alabaster Lamp By G. Masi (19th–20th Centuries, Italy).
Naiad, alabaster sculpture and nightlight signed G. Masi, Florence, early 1920s
DESCRIPTION:
Here is a beautiful alabaster naiad, leaning over the water, her head tilted and her hands raised to her face. She rests against a rock lapped by a wave, the entire piece set on a beveled pedestal. The pose is delicate and full of grace, and the drapery is barely suggested. It is signed “Masi G.” on the lower back and dates from the early 1920s. It comes from Florence, which has long been the leading center for alabaster sculpture.
The craftsmanship is superb: the face, the hands, and the figure as a whole are beautifully rendered, and the details—such as the hair and the foam of the wave—are meticulously executed. It also serves as a nightlight. When lit, the light passes through the alabaster and casts a soft, warm glow—truly pleasant in the evening.
A rare piece: To date, this is the only known sculpture of this model by the artist. decorative, it fits just as well in an Art Deco interior as it does in a more contemporary setting.
