Artist: E.crosnier

A charming 19th-century painting on wood panel, signed by E. Crosnier, after Louis-Auguste Loustaunau (1846–1898), a French painter renowned for his genre scenes and military compositions.

This delightful work, titled “Morning Reading,” depicts an intimate and charming scene in an elegant bourgeois interior from the late 19th century.

An officer in a blue uniform and red trousers, comfortably seated at a lavishly set table, appears absorbed in his reading, while an elegant young woman dressed in a long blue gown watches him with a dreamy expression.

In the background, a servant in livery waits discreetly, while several dogs enliven this familiar scene.

The composition stands out for the finesse of its execution, the richness of its details, and the beautiful harmony of its colors.

The artist paid particular attention to the costumes, the furniture, the carved woodwork, the silverware, and the numerous decorative objects. A lion skin placed in the foreground adds a touch of originality to this elegant and slightly humorous scene.

The panel shows a few small holes from old worm damage, which have been treated. These slight signs of age in no way detract from the charm of this work.

This painting is based on a composition by Louis-Auguste Loustaunau, an original version of which—an oil on canvas measuring 55 × 78.5 cm—was listed in an auction on October 30, 2002.

The painting bears the handwritten inscription “after Loustaunau – E. Crosnier” in the lower left corner.

It is presented in its beautiful, large original gilded frame, which particularly highlights this charming composition.

A decorative work full of character, particularly appealing to lovers of old master paintings, genre scenes, and 19th-century military subjects.
