Jacques Pouchain, Large Vase With Two Handles, Made Of Polychrome Glazed Ceramic, Circa 1970
Jacques Pouchain (1925–2015).
A large, two-handled glazed ceramic vase featuring a flattened ovoid body resting on a tall cylindrical pedestal, topped by a straight neck with a thickened rim.
The entire piece is covered with a grayish-white glaze with an irregular, textured surface. Each of the two sides features a large circular medallion with a stylized floral design, combining red, deep green, and white glazes. The geometric motifs intertwine in a dense composition, straddling the line between figuration and abstraction.
Trained in architecture and later attending the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Jacques Pouchain settled in the Drôme region in the early 1950s. After working at the Coursange pottery in Le Poët-Laval, he established his own studio in Dieulefit in 1958, where he developed a body of work blending utilitarian pottery and art ceramics.
Signature: Two “JP” monograms, one located at the base of the vase and the second on one of the sides, which is more difficult to read.
