Auguste Jean Amber-colored Glass Vase, Enameled And Gilded, With Japanese-style Decor, Circa 1880, 19th Century, Art Nouveau
Antique amber-colored blown glass vase by Auguste Jean (1829–1896), circa 1880.
Globular in shape with pronounced ribs, it features a dynamic opening with stretched and curled edges, accentuated by a hot-applied glass cord.
The body is adorned with a polychrome enamel decoration inspired by Japanese art, blending geometric motifs in shades of turquoise blue, green, and red with delicate flowering branches accented with gilding.
The originality of its shape and the delicacy of its decoration are characteristic of this glassmaker’s creations.
Auguste Jean (1829–1896), a French glassmaker and ceramicist active in Paris during the last quarter of the 19th century, developed a body of artistic glasswork recognizable by its free-form shapes, hot-applied glass elements, and enameled decorations. Influenced by Japonism, he contributed to the revival of the decorative arts of his time and, through some of his creations, foreshadowed the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
