Japanese Incense Burner In Patinated Bronze, Ibis On A Lotus & Frog – Meiji Period, 19th Century
Antique Japanese bronze incense burner with a brown patina, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912).
Depiction of a Japanese ibis (toki), perched on a lotus stem above a large leaf with wavy edges. A small frog perches on the leaf, completing this naturalistic composition inspired by aquatic flora and fauna.
The bird’s plumage is finely chiseled. Its legs rest on a plant stem, the tip of which is designed to hold an incense stick.
The bird’s body is hollow, and its dorsal plumage forms a removable lid.
The piece as a whole reflects the late 19th-century Japanese bronze casters’ taste for depictions of animals and plants, combining here the ibis, the lotus, and the frog in a composition with flowing lines.
Bronze with a brown patina featuring golden-brown hues on the raised parts.
