Jewish School (early 20th Century) - Rabbi Loew And The Golem
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Signed and dated by hand, but illegibly.
- In the shadowy twilight of the studio, where Rembrandt-esque chiaroscuro sculpts the flesh with the dramatic intensity of a Baroque *tronie*, the tragic moment of the creator’s sacrilege unfolds: the old Rabbi Loew watches, with desolation and helplessness, as the inert mass of clay shaped by his hands takes on an impious and tormented life. From the depths of the shadows emerges the Golem; he turns his face toward the master, not with the grateful devotion of a creature toward its creator, but fixing upon him a vacant and truly terrifying gaze, heralding the creature’s loss of control. The old man, wrapped in his thick cloak and weighed down by the burden of the Kabbalah, lets his gaze and shoulders slump in heart-wrenching despondency; he realizes, too late, that by breathing life into the lifeless matter, he has violated the divine order, and that the being that has just come into being is nothing other than a monster devoid of all mercy.
- Dimensions of the artwork without frame: 61 x 73 cm / 63 x 76 cm with an exclusive, custom-made frame.
