Mappin Webb 1912 Sheffield Sterling Silver Candlesticks Pair Neo Classical Adam
Pair of matching sterling silver candlesticks manufactured by Mappin and Webb. Each candlestick bears full British hallmarks on the outer rim of the base, including the maker mark M&W, the lion passant for 92.5% silver purity, the crown town mark for the Sheffield assay office, and the lowercase u date letter corresponding to the year 1912.The candlesticks measure approximately 31 cm in height, and each square base measures 13 cm across. The total gross weight for the pair is 2390 g. This weight includes the internal core material, as the under-surface of each base is enclosed, indicating weighted bases filled for stability. The candlesticks are designed in the Neo-Classical Adam Revival style. The structure consists of a square column that tapers downward to meet the tiered, widely spreading square base. The metallic surface features relief ornamentation including ribbon-tied bows, circular floral medallions, and vertical foliate drops running down the center of the columns. The capitals are formed in an urn shape with vertical reeding along the lower portion and draped festoons wrapping around the midsection. The square bases incorporate repeated beaded borders along the steps and embossed classical urn designs decorated with hanging laurel garlands. The matching removable sconces or nozzles feature a matching flared, beaded rim.
