Gilded Bronze Candlesticks, With Eagle And Serpent Motifs, Napoleon III Style
This superb pair of Napoleon III-era candlesticks (19th century) exemplifies the craftsmanship of Parisian bronze artists from the second half of the 19th century, combining the elegance of the materials with the virtuosity of the design and chasing. Crafted in bronze with a superb original gilding that shines with dazzling brilliance, they are adorned with a captivating allegorical design. Each candlestick rests on a twisted rocaille base, richly adorned with acanthus leaves and flowers, from which emerges a sinuous gilded bronze serpent. The central shaft winds in elegant volutes to form a perch for a silver-bronze, patinated eagle with outstretched wings.
The contrast between the brilliant gold and the patina enhances the drama of the scene, in which the eagle dominates the serpent coiled at its feet. The candlestick, adorned with acanthus motifs, is topped by an openwork candle holder, ready to hold a candle. The underside of the base features meticulous craftsmanship.
This high-quality piece, with its precise chiseling across its entire surface and its preserved matte and glossy gilding, will serve as a refined and historic decorative element for an exceptional interior.
