Jean Macron (1927–2008) - Port Grimaud

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Hand-signed. In 1972, this painting was used to create a commemorative postcard for the residential complex known as Port Grimaud, a lakeside community and marina project developed on river marshes by architect François Spoerry.

- The history of Port Grimaud is that of a bold architectural utopia that transformed an inhospitable marsh on the French Riviera into a global benchmark in urban planning. Designed in the mid-1960s by the visionary Alsatian architect François Spoerry, the city emerged as an organic and nostalgic response to the then-dominant concrete functionalism; it aimed to create a lakeside city where the sea would not merely be a horizon, but the main artery of the living space. After overcoming the authorities’ initial skepticism and complex hydraulic engineering challenges, construction began in 1966 to build a “Provençal Venice,” designed so that every household would have its own docking station at the foot of the house.

Spoerry’s genius crystallized in the concept of “soft architecture,” a philosophy that blends the aesthetics of traditional Mediterranean fishermen’s houses with an urban design entirely geared toward pedestrians and water traffic. No two facades are alike: variations in height, the pastel shades of the stucco, and the attention to artisanal detail give the entire village the patina of a historic village that seems to have evolved over the centuries. The pedestrian streets, the stone bridges spanning the navigable canals, and the harmonious integration of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi have made this place a masterpiece on a human scale, fostering an intimacy conducive to community life. Through its three phases of expansion, which continued into the 1990s, Port Grimaud has established itself as a pioneering and internationally acclaimed urban project, featuring more than two thousand homes arranged along seven kilometers of canals. What was initially dismissed as nothing more than a picturesque backdrop for bourgeois tourism received official recognition in 2002 as “20th-Century Heritage” from the French Ministry of Culture. Today, the village embodies not only the fulfilled dream of its creator—whose remains rest in the local church—but also a timeless lesson on the ability of modern architecture to reconcile the poetic beauty of a historic landscape with the functionality of contemporary living.
