Ancient Sculpture St. Pascal Baylon Linden XVII Century
A polychrome lindenwood sculpture depicting Saint Pasquale Baylon (1540–1592) in adoration of the Eucharist, holding in his left hand a monstrance that is now missing its radiating casing. He is recognizable not only by the typical pose of his iconography but also by his Franciscan habit and beardless face. His proclamation as Blessed in 1618 serves as a post quem date for the creation of the sculpture, a fact further confirmed by the stylistic features of the carving—in particular, the thick locks of hair, the full lips, and the heavy eyelids—which are characteristic of sculpture from the first half of the 17th century.
