13th-century Stone Corbel Capital Aisne Abbey
Carved limestone capital, with a basket capital decorated with stylized foliage, cross-shaped motifs, and upright acanthus leaves; convex, molded abacus.
Northern France, Aisne, 13th century.
Height: 28 cm – Width: 32 cm
Some chips, losses, and erosion.
This capital is believed to come from the former Benedictine abbey of the nuns of Origny-Sainte-Benoîte (Aisne), a medieval foundation located near Laon, which was completely dismantled after the French Revolution.
The abbey’s materials were reportedly sold as national property around 1796 for local construction projects. The destruction of the abbey and the dispersal of its stones are attested to by historical sources, notably: J. Poissonnier, History of the Royal Abbey of Origny-Sainte-Benoîte, 1888.
A charming, decorative, and generously sized capital. The abacus bears clear compass marks made by the stonemason.
Provenance: Louis Cavallier Collection (former member of the Aisne General Council).
