Attributed To Bernardo Strozzi (1581–1644) – Portrait Of A Man In A Red Cap

Artist: Strozzi
Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap – Presumed 17th century
A charming and remarkable small portrait of a bearded man wearing an imposing red cap trimmed with fur and gold-colored fabric.
Oil on wood panel, traditionally attributed to Bernardo Strozzi (1581–1644), a major painter of the Italian Baroque period, active first in Genoa and later in Venice.
The subject, depicted in a three-quarter bust portrait, stands out for his particularly expressive gaze, the subtlety of his skin tones, and the delicate play of light that brings his face to life.
The warm color palette, the contrasts between the dark background and the reddish-orange tones of the headdress, as well as the psychological power of the portrait, evoke the pictorial world of the Genoese master.
The work is presented in an antique molded frame with a black, red, and gold patina.
The reverse features a wooden panel with an old handwritten inscription reading “237.”
The overall dimensions are 25 cm high by 21 cm wide.
