Description of the work:
Square-format oil on canvas (80x80 cm) by the Spanish modernist artist Angel Ponce de León.
This mature work, painted in October 2012 during his time in the Camargue, depicts the bust of a nude woman wearing a majestic hat richly adorned with floral motifs. The composition is powerfully structured by a diagonal division of the background, contrasting a deep midnight blue with a vivid, sun-drenched red—a two-color contrast dear to the artist that evokes the duality of light and shadow (Sol y Sombra).
The geometric drapery with yellow and red harlequin patterns underscores the influence of Cubism and Fauvism in his work of deconstructing forms.
