Norwegian Fjord Landscape By Georg Anton Rasmussen (german, 1842–1914)
Artist: Georg Anton Rasmussen (allemand, 1842 - 1914)
Coastal Landscape with a Norwegian Fjord, a work by the famous German landscape painter Georg Anton Rasmussen (1842–1914).
Rasmussen received his first art lessons in Bergen from Johan Ludvig Losting and Anders Askevold. In 1863, he became a student of Frederik Rohde in Copenhagen and attended the local Academy of Fine Arts. From 1864 to 1867, he studied under Oswald Achenbach at the Düsseldorf Academy, where he was also strongly influenced by Hans Gude. The diversity of his landscape subjects diminished after 1870, likely to meet the demand of tourists who preferred to buy paintings of fjords. Alongside Adelsteen Normann and Anders Askevold, he became one of the most prolific fjord painters, achieving his greatest success in Germany. Nevertheless, just like his mentor Achenbach, he managed to avoid repeating himself despite the similarity of the subjects, giving each painting a personal touch. From 1868 to 1900, he was a member of the local artists’ association “Malkasten.” In 1899, he moved to Berlin. After 1900, he adopted the palette knife technique and the vivid colors characteristic of Adelsteen Normann’s style. He depicted his fjords backlit, under cloudy skies, and animated by boats representing local daily life, in a fresh, almost Impressionist pictorial style. The foreground often features figures and rowboats, which he painted with as much skill as the mountains, the sky, and the water. His paintings were often copied and distributed as oil reproductions. Some art historians today consider his significance as a painter to be lesser, as he did not join a Secessionist movement. His works are held, among other places, at the Bergen Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, the Dresden Art Gallery, and the Düsseldorf Art Museum.
