Maurizio Barricelli studied under the guidance of the Ligurian painter Achille Vianelli, who directed him toward landscape painting. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and later the Academy of San Luca in Rome. In 1897, he enlisted as a Garibaldian volunteer in the Greco-Turkish War. Upon returning to Rome, he became involved with the “In arte libertas” association, founded in 1886 by the painter Nino Costa, and befriended Duilio Cambellotti. He was part of the group of the first 25 artists of the Roman countryside. A group of artists in Rome challenged the selection criteria for works of art to be presented at exhibitions. Thus, the Roman Secession of 1913 was born, with Barricelli as one of its founders. The Secessionists’ first exhibition was held in Rome in 1913 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.
