Garuda Eagle in Polychrome and Gilded Wood, India, First Half of the 20th Century.
A very beautiful Indian statue dating from the first half of the 20th century, depicting Garuda, the eagle of Vishnu.
It is depicted in a protective yet almost menacing pose.
It is adorned with a crown and numerous jewels.
It is primarily green and polychrome, retaining its original gilding.
It is carved from a single block of wood; only the finely carved wings and the tail were added separately.
There are a few minor chips on the fingers, but they are not serious.
Garuda is a bird-like creature from Hindu mythology that combines the characteristics of an eagle and a human being. It is the vehicle (vahana) of Vishnu and appears on the god’s banner. Garuda represents birth and the sky, and it is the enemy of all serpents.
