Jiva, whose real name was Robert William Jivanovitch (1907–1974), was a painter, draftsman, and illustrator of Russian (or Serbian, according to some sources) origin, famous for his landscapes and scenes of daily life in the Basque Country.Born in Moscow in 1907, he fled the Bolshevik Revolution and arrived in Paris in 1931 before settling permanently in the Basque Country after World War II.He ran a shop by the ocean, near the main beach and the Bellevue Casino in Biarritz, where he sold his paintings in the 1960s.• Favorite subjects: The ocean, ports (Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Biarritz), beaches, the Pyrenean mountains, and traditional architecture (Basque farms and houses)
