He died in battle in Germany on September 21, 1796, whileattempting to cover General Jourdan’s retreat, and was granted funeral honors by hisAustrian adversaries.
He was enshrined in the Panthéon in 1889 during the celebrationsmarking the centennial of the French Revolution.
His ashes rest in the Panthéon, at Les Invalides, and inChartres.
