Flemish Tapestry—17th Century—depicting The Meeting Between David And King Saul

A superb 17th-century Flemish tapestry depicting a biblical scene: the meeting of David and King Saul

At the center of the composition, David—identified by the inscription “DAVID” woven onto his shoe—appears richly dressed, surrounded by a group of figures. To his left stands King Saul, depicted as an elderly, majestic, and strongly characterized man with a long white beard and a grave expression. Draped in sumptuous garments and wearing an imposing headdress, he adopts a solemn demeanor and appears to be addressing the young David directly, establishing a particularly expressive dialogue between the two figures.

David, in the center, is depicted in a richly ornamented costume, dominated by shades of blue and gold. At his side stands an elegant female figure, while in the background several court figures, both men and women, witness the scene. The arrangement of the figures, their gestures, and their gazes lend the composition a truly theatrical quality.

The scene unfolds against a lush backdrop of groves, foliage, draped curtains, and architectural elements, creating a skillful succession of planes. The refinement of the costumes is particularly remarkable: precious fabrics, embroidery, braids, and ornamental motifs attest to the care taken in both the design and the execution of the tapestry.

The composition is surrounded by a wide floral border, richly adorned with stylized flowers, foliage, and fruit on a dark blue background—a characteristic feature of the decorative tradition of Flemish tapestries.

A remarkable work due to the richness of its composition, the variety of characters, and the particularly refined treatment of the costumes and decorative elements.
A tapestry in excellent condition that has retained its superb colors and is ready to be hung directly in an interior.
