French Regency Period Oak Commode (18th Century)

The first half of the 18th century heralded a fresh approach to domestic living. Louis XIV-era architecture and interiors were designed as much for grandeur as for drafts and poorly heated rooms. Upon the "Sun King's" death in 1715, the Regency of the Duke of Orléans orchestrated a move of the court to Paris while awaiting Louis XV’s coming of age. This shift brought changes. Private townhouses (hôtels particuliers) under construction or renovation began scaling down their living spaces—though not their formal reception rooms—and required furnishings that reflected a more relaxed aesthetic. Severe lines softened, and graceful curves enlivened the legs and uprights. Pattern books quickly spread these trends to the provinces, which promptly adopted the Parisian style. This charming oak commode is a perfect example of that evolution.

Five drawers open via gilt-bronze pulls; their shapes already hint at the *Rocaille* style. The molded frames and uprights, along with the "crossbow-shaped" (arbalète) apron, are details that surely delighted their own era—and continue to captivate ours today.

In excellent condition, this modestly sized commode would fit perfectly in an apartment or house, or perhaps even return to a château bedroom.
