José Frappa French Antique Figurative Oil Painting, Cardinal Musician, Framed
José Frappa – The Musician Cardinal, signed oil on panel, with gilded frame
This oil on panel painting by José Frappa (1854–1904) depicts a cardinal dressed in red, seated in a richly decorated interior and playing a stringed instrument. This intimate scene combines music, humor, and decorative refinement.
The warm red of the cardinal’s attire draws the eye to the center of the composition. The folds of the garment, the patterns on the rug, and the details of the furniture attest to the care taken in rendering the textures. The figure’s animated expression and relaxed posture lend the entire scene a particularly lively presence.
A tall clock and patterned drapes complete the setting. The shades of red, brown, and gold create an enveloping atmosphere, while the contrasts of light highlight the face, hands, and instrument.
The work is signed in the upper right corner. A label from the Water Street Gallery is affixed to the reverse.
The painting is presented in a richly ornamented gilded frame, included in the sale. Its size is suitable for a study, a library, or a living room, as well as for a collection devoted to genre scenes and depictions of cardinals.
