Ceres Clock
The powerful goddess of the Earth is depicted wearing a diadem of wheat ears and holding a raised sickle. She symbolizes cyclical time, which follows the rhythm of the ever-returning seasons. All elements of the clock are subordinate to this theme: the clock forms the center of a sheaf of wheat, whose ears frame the dial like rays of sunlight.
To the right of the clock are a threshing flail and a basket. The base’s reliefs consist of a rake and a spade.
The detailed and elaborate relief on the base depicts a farmer plowing a field. His labor is part of nature’s perpetual cycle. Above all, the goddess’s sickle stands out—in the bronze composition, it symbolizes death and life, eternal becoming and transition.
