José Cruz Herrera (1890–1972); Style Of - The Gathering Of The Kabyles

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas.

- José Cruz Herrera’s perspective on North Africa is free from the superficial exoticism or colonialist condescension characteristic of 19th-century Orientalism; above all, it reflects a fascination imbued with devotion and an almost brotherly intimacy. Based in Casablanca and dazzled by the blinding light of the Maghreb, the painter—a native of La Línea—was able to transcend mere picturesque scenes to capture the dignity of everyday life in the Arab world. His depictions of ordinary people—women with inscrutable gazes draped in silks and haiks, weathered-faced old men from the souk, or merchants enveloped in the silence of the medinas—do not pose as travel trophies, but as monumental figures imbued with truth, sensuality, and a restrained nobility. Through a sumptuous color palette, a masterful command of his medium, and a reverent respect for the customs of the other side of the Strait, Cruz Herrera has built a unique artistic bridge between Spain and Morocco, where otherness merges into a deep and shared Mediterranean fascination.
