Wooden Bracelet For Ball Games, Late 19th Century
A wooden "glove" for the game of "pallone col bracciale." This "small" bracelet was used mainly in Piedmont and Liguria, while the "large" one was common in Central Italy (especially Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and the Marche). The game of “pallone col bracciale” was the most popular sport in Italy until 1930, when soccer became popular. There was a significant amount of betting surrounding these matches, which pitted two teams of three players against each other. The name of the artisan who crafted it is engraved on the top; however, due to wear, it is barely legible. Woodworm holes are visible, but the piece has been treated and is in good condition.
