Bronze And Brass Ship's Rudder – World War II – Liberty Ship Type
An important and fascinating vintage bronze ship's rudder, dating from the World War II period.
Based on its construction, materials, and dimensions, the rudder can be traced back to the large steering systems used on American merchant ships during World War II, and is compatible with the wheels used in the steering stations of Liberty Ships.
The sturdy wheel features six spokes and six distinctive shaped brass grips, attached separately to the structure. The central hole in the shaft is equipped with a keyway, designed to prevent the wheel from slipping on the shaft during maneuvers.
The rudder retains a beautiful original antique patina, with oxidation, wear, scratches, and normal signs of age and use. Overall, it is in excellent general condition, with no visible breaks or cracks.
An important piece of nautical and naval antiques, with great decorative presence and of particular interest to collectors of maritime memorabilia and World War II artifacts.
