Jacobus Victors (1640–1705) Scene From A Farmyard
A major animal painting by Jacobus Victors depicting a farmyard.
A native of Amsterdam, Jacobus Victors (1640–1705) was the half-brother of the painter Jan Victors (c. 1620–c. 1676). He lived in Venice until 1663 before returning to Amsterdam.
A significant portion of his work is devoted to birds and farmyard scenes, in the great tradition of 17th-century Dutch animal painting. His art is particularly reminiscent of that of Melchior d’Hondecoeter, one of the great masters of the genre.
This painting perfectly illustrates this artistic approach. The naturalistic precision with which the various plumages are rendered is accompanied by a remarkable sense of composition.
The painting is presented in its period frame, a 17th-century molded wooden frame, blackened and gilded. The combination of black and gold particularly highlights the deep and luminous tones of the composition.
