Salt Bottle, Known As “vinaigrette,” Blue Crystal And Solid Silver With Fine Gold Decoration, Medical Use, Ref. 1191
Display piece or medical item:
A salt bottle, sometimes called a “vinaigrette,” made of blue crystal and solid silver, from the second half of the 19th century.
A charming teardrop-shaped model, faceted, featuring a delicate design of small foliage motifs applied in fine gold.
The contrast between the deep blue crystal, the gold accents, and the silver setting lends it great elegance.
The lid bears two silver hallmarks that have yet to be identified. The silver has also been tested with a touchstone.
These small vials were used in the 19th century to hold salts or aromatic preparations that people would inhale in cases of dizziness or fainting (particularly due to overly tight corsets).
Period: second half of the 19th century.
Condition: good overall condition, uncleaned; some minor, normal wear on the fine gold decoration due to age and use.
The small inner stopper is missing.
The outer lid and hinge are in good working condition; note a tiny, barely visible chip about the size of a pinhead (see the photos, particularly the last enlarged photo).
A beautiful display piece, decorative and typical of the refined accessories of the second half of the 19th century.
