Later,as a student of Théodore Géricault, he enjoyed a brilliant career in Paris, where heexhibited at the Salon from 1831 until his death. He demonstrated a particular fondnessfor animal subjects, especially horses and equestrian groups.Critical reviews were numerous and often laudatory, portraying Fratin asBarye’s “formidable rival.” He also devoted himself tosmall-scale sculpture, depicting wild and domestic animals (atotal of more than 600 models). Among them were bears andanthropomorphic monkeys, which became his specialty. Although never exhibited at the Salon, theseworks nevertheless enjoyed great commercial success throughout the 19thcentury and beyond. After moving to England between 1833 and 1834, his successquickly became international. The sculptor created large Romantic groupsin Germany, in Potsdam at the Sanssouci and Babelsberg palaces, where some are still preserved; he even went so far as to exhibit his worksin St. Petersburg, where they adorned the Russian emperor’s park. Hisparticipation in the 1851 exhibition in London earned him a medal andgreat renown. He is regarded as one of the most important sculptors ofhis time. Since he did not have his own foundry, his bronzes were castby the Susse brothers, and later by Daubrée.
