Mechanical Planetarium With A Globe Of The Earth – Germany, Late 19th Century
A scientific and educational instrument of the mechanical globe type, consisting of a printed paper globe mounted on a metal and brass frame resting on a cast-iron base. The device is equipped with a crank mechanism, a zodiacal disc, and an articulated arm supporting a sphere representing the Sun, allowing for the illustration of the Earth’s relative movements within the solar system. The globe is labeled “Politischer Erdglobus,” based on the work of the German geographer Paul Oestreich and published in Leipzig.
This type of instrument was used in schools and study rooms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for teaching geography and astronomy. The piece displays a beautiful patina from use and retains its main original components.
