Marie-Jo Bourron is a French sculptor who lived at 13 Quai de la Monnaie in Bordeaux between 1962 and 1965. Her friend François Soubeyran, one of the four members of the Frères Jacques—a singer but also a potter—introduced her to working with clay.
Marie-Jo Bourron enrolled in evening classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1968, where, as a student of Étienne-Martin from 1972 to 1978, she mastered the art of modeling and learned the secrets of casting. In Cardot’s studio, she trained in stonework, and at Perrin’s, in metalwork. She exhibited for the first time in 1974 at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. She went on to win numerous awards and exhibited nearly every year in France as well as in the United States, Germany, and Switzerland, both in solo and group shows, notably in 1988 in Chicago as part of a two-person exhibition, at the Jacques Baruch Gallery with photographer Lucien Clergue and painter Sacha Chimkevitch
Drawing on Rodin’s technique and mastery, Marie-Jo Bourron worked with a freedom and modernity of expression that gave her work a unique character. She was a well-rounded artist. Working with traditional materials such as bronze and marble, she expanded her repertoire by using original plaster casts that she patinated, cast or molded resins, other composites, and finally, clay. The latter material was her medium of choice.
Marie-Jo Bourron draws direct inspiration from Camille Claudel. Like Claudel, she is one of the few women sculptors and also pursues a quest for realism. Marie-Jo imbues her nudes with a similar touch, carefully crafting their poses and patinas. She brings a bold new perspective to her work.
