"parisian Street" By Antoine Ferrari
Artist: Antoine Ferrari 1910-1995
Oil on canvas measuring 54 cm x 65 cm, plus wooden frame 60 cm x 71 cm
Signed lower left
Illegible annotation on the back (the word “Paris” is legible)
Antoine FERRARI, born in 1910 in Marseille, died in 1995
He was one of the greatest Provençal painters of his generation
A gestural, lively, and dynamic style for an artist who exuded exemplary tranquility and serenity
He was a student at the Marseille School of Fine Arts. At age 17, he moved to Paris and began working in a theater set design studio
He began exhibiting as early as 1928
He met Ambrogiani, and beginning in 1930, he received a scholarship to study painting
In 1937, he won the Abdel-Tif Prize, which allowed him to spend two years in Algeria. There he developed his bold use of color.
He took over Pascin’s studio in Paris
He expressed himself through large-scale nudes, portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and views of the port of Marseille
His style, which, after long reflection, bursts forth like a lash of a whip—like an impulsive painter—which would earn him recognition as the most expressionistic of contemporary Provençal painters
