Biography:

Clovis Edmond MASSON 1838 / 1913

Animal sculptor born in Paris on March 7, 1838, and died in 1913.

A student of Santiago, Antoine Louis Barye, and Rouillard, he exhibited at the Salon from 1867 to 1881 and received an honorable mention there in 1890.

He specialized in animal sculpture. He most often used plaster, wax, or bronze as his materials.

From 1867 onward, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon until 1881. He created more than fifty works by 1909.

The Equestrian Statue of the King of Siam:

In early 1907, King Chulalongkorn of Thailand, known as Rama V, decided to have a monument erected in his honor on a vast, empty esplanade where the parliament building would soon be constructed (though it would not be completed until 1915).

Rama V set sail for Europe in 1907. From the very beginning, Chulalongkorn had envisioned commissioning an equestrian statue. His visit to the Palace of Versailles in the spring of 1907 finally convinced him.

Like that of Louis XIV, whose statue stands in the palace’s main courtyard, Rama V would also leave his mark on Bangkok with his equestrian statue. It was therefore in France that Rama V had his statue created.

In mid-June 1907, the Thai monarch posed for sculptor Georges Saulo in the Susse brothers’ foundry workshops on Boulevard de la Madeleine in Paris, while sculptor Clovis Masson created the horse intended to support the king’s statue.
