Signed Animal-themed Bronze Sculpture By Victor Chemin—19th Century.
Artist: Joseph-françois-victor Chemin (1825-1901)
An elegant bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting a seated, roaring lion pinning a snake to the ground. This work from the second half of the 19th century is signed “V. CHEMIN” on the base. Joseph-François-Victor Chemin (1825–1901), a renowned sculptor of the French school, was a student of Barye, whose influence is particularly evident here in the lion’s dynamic energy and anatomical power. The sculpture rests on its original white marble base, adorned with an engraved brass cartouche plaque reading: “LION ON A SNAKE By V. Chemin (Sculptor).”
