18th-century Folk Art Trompe-l’œil: Large Ashwood Bootmaker’s Measuring Stick

A charming  and unusual measuring instrument of distinctly rustic workmanship.

The square graduated stem is fitted with a sole-shaped base and a sliding upper in the form of a laced shoe, both carved from ashwood.

The rule, engraved with ten numerals, extends by means of a sliding section to almost double its height, allowing either the customer’s shoe size or the height of a boot shaft to be measured.
A finely turned boxwood knob at the end serves for hanging.

An appealing primitive piece , entirely shaped by hand with knife. The characterful engraving of the numerals, typical of the 18th century, shows occasional irregularities, particularly in the figure 3.

Good overall condition, with expected signs of age and a slight curvature to the wood.
