A fascinating and early terracotta sketch of a musician or vagabond, made in Holland during the second half of the 17th century. It is very close to terracottas by the Antwerp-born Pieter Xavery (1646 – 1673), who settled in Leiden around 1670 and procuded similar terracotta figures there of the same style, scale and subject-matter, and who used a similar yellowish-pink baking clay. However, Xavery is not known to have applied paint to his terracottas, as is the case with this figure, which was presumably made by an artist under his influence.
