The painting depicts a half-length portrait of a royal couple, wearing ermine cloaks and holding sceptres. Both are crowned, but what sets this painting apart is that the female figure holds a second crown in her hands: the other figure, who appears younger, wears a simpler crown—a symbol of lower rank—and is depicted in a state of ecstasy, with her hand on her heart and her gaze turned toward the sky.
It is believed to depict Theodolinda, the Christian queen of the Lombards, who crowned her young son Adaloaldo—for whom she served as regent—a martyr; he was the first Lombard ruler to be baptized and was assassinated for his pro-Catholic and pro-Roman policies.
Still on its original canvas, the painting shows patches from previous restoration but requires further restoration and cleaning.
