This is therefore a very beautiful Post-Impressionist composition by Mario Pinetti, depicting—as is the case nine times out of ten—a view of the island of Oléron; here, a fisherman’s hut in the marshes near Sauzelle, circa 1950. He clearly employs his usual powerful and energetic brushwork, as well as his characteristic palette, where yellows, ochres, greens, and mauves blend with grays and blues—a combination he mastered so well.
Mario Pinetti, of Italian origin, studied in Paris, where he settled and even established his own studio. A traveling painter, he explored France before falling under the spell of the Île d’Oléron, where he would return every year to create hundreds of works—whether in the countryside, on the beaches, in the harbors, and so on...He had a particular fondness for the east coast—Boyardville, Sauzelle, La Brée, Arceau, and others. Thanks to his talent, he was able to capture the island’s unique light with remarkable skill.
Today, he is considered one of the greatest painters to have depicted Oléron, alongside Lessieux, Boucart, Verger, Chevalier, Massé, and others...
He received numerous awards and exhibited at countless art fairs, including “Artistes Français,” among others...
The Musée de l’Île d’Oléron displayed several of his paintings during the 2023 exhibition, which were reproduced in a catalog.
