Painter, draftsman, and wood engraver

A Hamburg-based artist, Alwin Carstens trained locally and, beginning in the 1930s, developed a career in graphic arts, much of which was lost during the bombings of 1943. After 1945, he resumed his work amid the artistic reconstruction of the city, turning to panel painting and woodcut, a medium in which he fully established himself.
His recurring motifs—views of the Port of Hamburg, industrial silhouettes, bridges, and cranes—carry on the Expressionist legacy through a powerful treatment of lines and forms. Beginning in the 1950s, his artistic language evolved toward a more structured abstraction, blending geometry and rhythmic color, in dialogue with German Informel art.
As a member of the Verschollene Generation, Carstens embodies those artists whose careers were shaped by war and reconstruction. His work, much of which was preserved in his studio (often stamped with the “ Alwin Carstens 1906–1982 Nachlass”), continues to appear regularly on the art market, particularly his woodcuts depicting harbors and his late abstract compositions."
