A Two-panel Gold Leaf Screen With A Pair Of Pheasants Beneath A Flowering Tree
An antique Japanese two-panel screen, painted on paper with a gold leaf and gold powder ground, depicting a pair of pheasants beneath a flowering cherry tree (sakura).
The male pheasant, perched on a rock, is rendered with a long tail and elegant grey-silver plumage, while the female appears among tufts of grass and delicate blossoms at the foot of the tree.
The gnarled trunk of the cherry tree extends diagonally across the screen, supporting a dense network of flowering branches that spreads across much of the surface. In the background, broad clouds executed in gold powder alternate with areas of gold leaf, creating a sense of depth.
