Large Planter On A Glazed Stoneware Pedestal In The Westerwald Style, 19th Century

A large and spectacular glazed stoneware planter on a pedestal, likely of continental origin, possibly German, crafted in the style of Westerwald pieces toward the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century.

The piece features a beautiful combination of gray, cobalt blue, and greenish hues, characteristic of decorative stoneware in this tradition. The richly worked surface features a particularly abundant high-relief decoration.

The upper planter is adorned with figures and mascarons in relief, accompanied by Renaissance-inspired geometric and ornamental motifs. It rests on a substantial circular pedestal composed of several molded elements.

The tall central column features a remarkable applied decoration of foliage and climbing vines, surrounding a large heraldic cartouche in relief. The tiered circular base echoes this rich ornamentation and provides excellent stability to the entire piece.

The cobalt blue decoration on a light gray background, combined with the reliefs and various shades of glaze, gives this piece remarkable depth and decorative presence.
