The Pierced Rock – Engraving By Marie-rosalie Bertaud, After A Work By Joseph Vernet – 18th Century

An important black-and-white engraving titled *Le Rocher percé*, created by Marie-Rosalie Bertaud (1738–1798) based on a composition by the famous seascape painter Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714–1789).

The composition, presented in an oval medallion, depicts a seascape animated by numerous figures. In the foreground, several fishermen are busy on a rocky shore, accompanied by two women and a dog. In the background, various boats sail across a body of water bordered by rock formations.

On the left, an imposing tower dominates the landscape, while on the right stands a spectacular rock naturally pierced by a large opening, which gives the work its title.

The rendering of the play of light, the nuances of the cloudy sky, and the finesse of the architectural details and figures attest to the quality of this composition, characteristic of Joseph Vernet’s work.

The lower part of the engraving bears the inscriptions “J. Vernet Pinx.” and “Mlle Rle Bertaud Sculp.,” identifying, respectively, the painter of the original composition and the engraver.

It is also adorned with a coat of arms and a dedication to Monsieur le Chevalier de Revel, Grand Cross of the Order of Malta and Commander of the Commandery of Arvinas.

This print, whose composition and engraving date back to the 18th century, follows in the tradition of the great interpretive engravings based on the works of French painters of that period.

However, it is important to distinguish between the date the engraving was created and that of this particular print, which may be later, specifically from the early 19th century.

Mounted under glass in a frame with gilded molding and a wide, light-colored mat.

A few foxing spots and slight signs of aging, mainly visible in the lower margins. Appears to be in good overall condition, subject to examination outside the frame.

Shipped by carrier between two wooden panels: 80 euros within France, 150 euros within the EU, and 300 euros to the rest of the world.
