19th Century Swedish Rococo Style Poetic Garden Scene Oil Canvas Signed Nehrman
Artist: John Alfred Nehrman
This theatrical genre scene, painted in oil on canvas in the late 19th century by the renowned Swedish lithographer, painter and draughtsman John Alfred Nehrman (1860–1936), is skilfully stylised in the form of a tondo, organically fitted into the square format of the canvas. Against the backdrop of an idyllic rural landscape, a young couple, attired in exquisite historical costumes of the Rococo era, rests upon a wooden bench in the shade of a spreading tree. The young lady, with a light, barely perceptible smile, reads aloud a secret message to her companion, whose relaxed posture and attentive gaze betray a profound emotional engagement in the dialogue. Beside the gentleman, upon the soft grass, a basket of freshly gathered flowers has been left, underscoring the pastoral character of the subject. The painter, employing a rich colour palette, chiaroscuro modelling and contrast, perfectly renders the features of the faces and the texture of the figures' sumptuous garments. This artwork, imbued with poetry, gentle flirtation and historical charm, will become an exquisite accent in any interior and a worthy acquisition for collectors of European genre and salon painting.
