Oil on panel by François Corbellini depicting a luminous landscape near Ajaccio, where arid hills, Mediterranean vegetation, and a body of water come together to form a quintessentially Corsican scene bathed in a calm, sun-drenched atmosphere.

This work, executed in a soft and warm color palette, attests to Corbellini’s deep attachment to the Isle of Beauty, of which he was one of the most sensitive interpreters in the early 20th century. The composition, built around a clear horizon line and a succession of colorful planes, reveals a free and lively style of painting, attentive to the unique lighting effects characteristic of Corsican landscapes.

A leading figure of the Ajaccio School, François Corbellini devoted a large part of his work to Corsica, for which he also became an ambassador through his watercolors and illustrations, contributing to the development of the island’s nascent tourism industry. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Moreau, he maintained a deep fascination with Corsican landscapes throughout his life, from the calanques of Piana to the surroundings of Ajaccio.

Corbellini was also the first official curator of the Fesch Museum. He continued his artistic work in his Ajaccio studio until the end of his life and passed away in Piana in 1943, at the age of eighty.

This painting comes from the collection of the painter René Barraud, lending the work a particularly interesting artistic provenance.

Good overall condition. Some slight wear and small visible losses along the lower edge, consistent with the work’s age.
