Set Consisting Of An Oil-on-canvas Painting By A Follower Of Francesco Casanova And An Engraving Of It By Le Vasseur,
Francesco Casanova was born on June 1, 1727, in London, where his mother had first taken to the stage as an actress. It was rumored that he was the illegitimate son of King George II. He was the younger brother of Giacomo Casanova. In his day, he was such a renowned battle painter that, at the time, it was his brother Giacomo who was often recognized for his connection “to the famous painter”; however, this hard-won fame faded shortly after his death. He died in poverty, even though he had earned substantial sums from clients such as the Prince of Condé and Catherine II of Russia; however, his very disorderly lifestyle also led him to squander his enormous earnings.
He settled in Paris in 1751 and was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture on August 22, 1761; he was admitted on May 28, 1763, with his *Cavalyry Battle* as his admission piece. This painter’s works are featured in the collections of numerous museums around the world.
The painter and collector Jacques Augustin de Silvestre (1719–1809) owned two of his paintings: “Landscape Enriched with Ruins, Featuring a Shepherd with Cows and Sheep Near a Fountain.” (Wikipedia).
The painting presented today appears to be this one and seems to have been painted and framed in the 19th century. The accompanying engraving is an exact reproduction of the painting and bears the inscriptions “painted by Casanova, painter to the king” and “engraved by Laurent and finished with a burin by Le Vasseur, engraver to the king,” both 18th-century artists.
In perfect condition, the painting measures 36.5 cm wide by 36 cm high without the frame (52.5 x 55 H with frame); the framed engraving measures 48.5 x 46.5 H.
