Beppe Ciardi, son of the better-known Guglielmo, was one of the leading figures in early 20th-century Venetian painting, an heir to a tradition of landscape painting that he interpreted in a tonalist and Impressionist style. The three small panels, united in a single frame, document his customary practice of painting from life, executed en plein air over the course of several years. The first panel depicts the Riva degli Schiavoni with figures along the waterfront and the open lagoon in the background; the second shows a view of the Grand Canal with the palaces reflected in the water; the third depicts a twilight scene with a group of figures in the foreground and the silhouette of the city fading into the lagoon fog.
