Yves Zurstrassen, Belgian artist, “Le Géophage,” oil on canvas, signed and dated on the back, 1969.
He meticulously constructs his canvases using various layers of oil paint, applied with a brush or palette knife, which he combines with collages and décollages—a technique that uses the negative of a stencil.
Much like a composer who creates music from notes and silences alternating in a rhythmic and melodious manner, Zurstrassen “composes” his paintings with great freedom, thanks, on the one hand, to an expressive and intuitive pictorial approach and, on the other, to a structured and formal method.
The use of vivid colors, along with a variety of abstract and figurative motifs, gives rise to striking works in which movement and stillness intertwine, much like sound and silence in music.
